Tam Coc — boat through karst caves
Nicknamed the 'inland Ha Long Bay', Tam Coc offers a 2-hour flat-bottomed boat ride through three natural caves cut into limestone cliffs. Women rowers use their feet while gliding past flooded rice paddies. Entry + boat: €5.

Hoa Lu — ancient imperial capital
Vietnam's first independent capital (968-1010), Hoa Lu is nestled in a limestone cliff amphitheatre. Temples dedicated to the Dinh and Le dynasties, though rebuilt, retain their exceptional historical setting. 3 km from Tam Coc, combined visit possible. Free entry.

Cycling through rice fields and villages
Ninh Binh is ideal for cycling. The circular route between Tam Coc, Hoa Lu and Ninh Hai village follows rice paddies, crosses villages and passes under limestone arches. Bike rental around €2/day from accommodation. The best way to explore the countryside.

Bich Dong — pagoda inside a mountain
This 15th-century pagoda is built inside and above a limestone cave. Three levels to climb to reach the upper pagoda with its panoramic view. The path winds between stalactites, buddhas and tropical vegetation. Entry included in the Tam Coc ticket.

Trang An — UNESCO site by boat
Listed as UNESCO mixed heritage (landscape and archaeology), Trang An is a wetland dotted with karst pinnacles. Boats pass through 9 caves, some only discovered in 2000. More peaceful and wild than Tam Coc. Entry + boat: €9.

Van Long Reserve — monkeys and buffaloes
Northern Vietnam's largest inland freshwater wetland is a sanctuary for Delacour's langurs (critically endangered species). Silent rowboat at sunrise through a preserved karst landscape. Less known than Tam Coc but far wilder. ~€4.

Mua Cave — 360° panorama over Tam Coc
The climb of 500 steps leads to a karst summit with a 360° view over the Tam Coc plain, rice fields and the river winding between pinnacles. Sunrise from the summit is one of Vietnam's most iconic views. Entry €3, 30-minute climb.

Mountain goat — local speciality
Ninh Binh is renowned for its mountain goat meat (de nui), raised on limestone cliffs. Restaurants around Tam Coc offer grilled, hotpot and stewed goat at unbeatable prices (~€5-8 for a full meal). An authentic regional culinary curiosity.
