Trang An — UNESCO site by boat
Listed as UNESCO mixed heritage (landscape and archaeology), Trang An is a wetland dotted with karst pinnacles. Boats pass through 9 caves, some only discovered in 2000. More peaceful and wild than Tam Coc. Entry + boat: €9.

Van Long Reserve — monkeys and buffaloes
Northern Vietnam's largest inland freshwater wetland is a sanctuary for Delacour's langurs (critically endangered species). Silent rowboat at sunrise through a preserved karst landscape. Less known than Tam Coc but far wilder. ~€4.

The climb of 500 steps leads to a karst summit with a 360° view over the Tam Coc plain, rice fields and the river winding between pinnacles. Sunrise from the summit is one of Vietnam's most iconic views. Entry €3, 30-minute climb.
